Foodbank

On Sunday 12th February, we held a 'Foodbank Vision-Sharing Evening' at Ebenezer Church to share a journey that Ebenezer Church, Filton Community Church and St James Church have been on to set up a foodbank.

Please listen to the various talks from the evening below and view the notes. If you wish to volunteer in anyway, then please speak to Stewart North (Ebe), Tony Matthews (FCC) or contact Ebenezer Church office here.

Food Poverty

  • Over 4 million people in the UK cannot afford a healthy diet
  • 1 in 7 people over the age of 65 are at serious risk of malnourishment
  • 6.7 million people are affected by low income -perhaps the most critical factor leading to food poverty
  • 28.7% of Children in Bristol Live in Income Deprived Households
  • Bristol has significant areas of deprivation, with food poverty a key issue

The Trussell Trust

This charity works to empower local communities to combat poverty and exclusion in the UK and Bulgaria. They work with the people that society forgets, providing practical help through sustainable projects and enabling each person to realise that they are valued. The vision is to build communities where people of all backgrounds are included and have the opportunity to live in dignity with hope for the future.

They are a Christian organisation motivated by Jesus’ teaching on poverty and injustice. They operate according to Christian principles of compassion, honesty, integrity, openness, kindness and care of all people, regardless of backgrounds or beliefs. They believe in turning faith into practical action, living out God’s love for the poor...

‘For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ (Matthew 25:35-36)

Student Story 2

What’s your name?
My name is Effie Lin

Where do you come from?
I was born in Hong Kong but I was brought up in Macau.

What and where are you studying?
I have graduated from UWE with a BA(hons) in Accounting & Finance

What were your first impressions of Bristol?
Very quiet compared to where I come from. Every street and houses looks exactly the same and you can easily get lost.

Highs and lows of being a fresher?
Highs - very excited to be away from home for the first time. Meeting new people from different cultures and backgrounds, and having fun.
Lows - lonely at times like Christmas or Chinese New Year. The buses was horrible in Bristol. (not using buses anymore but I hope they had improved since I stopped)

Top tips for surviving your first year?
Study and Social Life balance - try not to miss too many lectures.

What was it like finding and settling into church as a student?
Very nice. People are friendly and give you a family away from home, although probably just a on a Sunday morning, but that is good enough to make a different.

Best thing about Bristol?
Ebe (church) for sure.
Bristol is busy enough to have good shops and restaurants, but not as busy compared to some other big cities like London or Birmingham.

Takeaway recommendation in Bristol?
Chinese - New Happy Palace on Filton Avenue. (their sweet and sour chicken balls and chow mein are amazing!)
