Lydia returned from Romania
Lydia went to Constanta, Romania from 25th July to 2nd August, with the Post-16 team from Woodlands Church. Here is a short update of how it went.
What did you get up to whilst in Romania?
We stayed at the PRR Boys Home for the first weekend, and headed to the camp on Monday with all the kids- 55 in total, ranging from 4 to 18 years old. We were basically there to become friends with the children, and to help with the running of the camp ie. running the morning and evening sessions for the children, and general organising of craft and games. The camp finished on Friday and we went back to the boys home. On Saturday we met with a Scottish couple (Heather and Alex Chalmers) who have been living in Romania for the past 10 years and have set up a church in the local community and also run a kids club. We also visited the some of the children's homes, which was an experience, as the conditions are very different to what all of the team were used to. We finished our trip with Church at the Boys Home and then set off for the airport home!
What did you do in the summer camp?
We started off with a team meeting in the morning, and then had breakfast, followed by a meeting with all the kids, which included songs and drama, all focused on the theme of shining like stars (Philippians 2:15). We then did craft centered on the particular theme of that day, and some games. In the afternoon we went out somewhere, for example we went fishing, to a waterpark, and on a boat trip. We would then head home and have tea, and finish of with an evening meeting with the kids :)
What were some of your highlights?
Highlights were probably the times in between all the activities, where we just got to chill and make friends with the kids. We all made really close friendships with them, so the relationship between all of us is a definite highlight!
What did God do in you?
I was shown how easy it is to share God's love with people, it can be as little as letting them play with your hair, or as big as standing up and doing a drama in front of all the children. A little love can go a long way, and i was shown that throughout the week!
Would you recommend others did short term mission like this?
And YES, i definitely would!!! Especially if you feel you need a change of scene or perspective, get on a trip asap!! It was amazing.
