You know that moment? When something that seemed like ages away and far off in the future, suddenly hits you smack between the eyes, it’s right up there in your face, it’s most definitely happening, and soon? That would be University then, and the moving out of home, possibly to a totally different part the country, probably not knowing anyone, three years or more of the unknown stretching out in front of you…
It’s a big deal isn’t it?! And you know what? You don’t need to pretend otherwise.
That mixture of paralysing fear with a tinge of nervous excitement, is normal. The frantic reading of ‘cooking on a budget’ and ‘how to make your student loan stretch’ hoping to find solutions in amongst words that are really just a bit of a blur, that’s happening all over the country. There’s the supermarket shop, and trying to figure out whether buying washing up liquid and taking a tea towel is going to make you a hero or zero. The scan through your wardrobe and fear that you just don’t have enough outfits for a degree length of time. And there’s the horrendous moral dilemma of whether to take the dressing gown your Nan made you that you know isn’t going to win you any friends… (Maybe that was just me?)
Then there’s the God stuff.
Maybe you’re thinking about sacking it all in and doing it your way?
Maybe you’re wanting to be a Christian at Uni but you’re not sure if your faith is going to resist the pull of fitting in with the masses?
Maybe you just can’t wait to get started and telling people about Jesus?
Please don’t sack off God. Said with a load of love from someone who did that and thought they knew better. It’s a long road back. And God has got way too much good stuff for you, and stuff that is a heck of a lot better than the things that might be looking more appealing right now.
You don’t need to be a follower of Jesus on your own. That’s not what’s expected of you. There are loads of easy ways you can connect with local churches, your CU, and other Christians, right now, before you even get there.
If you’re excited, own that and go for it! Get stuck in and expect God to show up.
Wherever you’re at, God loves you, He is with you, and He’s got you covered.
And don’t forget: Church is family. We are on your side, and we are with you in this. We are praying for you, cheering you on, and ready to do this chunk of life with you.
Have a watch of this ‘Freshers Prayer’ done by our friends at Fusion:
If you’re a fresher, this is what we’re praying for you. Be encouraged. (And check out the awesome Student Linkup app.)
If you’re a person in a church that will be welcoming students in September get praying, and get your welcoming face on and ready.
