By Dave Witt

My work this year involves working in two schools, Upper Horfield Primary and Romney Avenue Juniors for one morning and two afternoons a week. I work as a helper in class, helping with homework clubs and just playing games with 5 and 6 year olds! At the start of the year I had never done any schools work before (not including when I was at school of course!), and thoughts of whether I could cope floated through my mind. Over the course of the year, however, I’ve found that God has really blessed and helped me, it has changed my outlook on life, and I am now considering working in education.

Another part of the year team is to attend a bible training day at the George Müller Foundation, this has been great, good bible teaching, fellowship, meeting new people and you get free tea and biscuits! I feel I’ve learnt a lot about my faith, and I’ve been challenged on many issues.

Working with international students has always been something I wanted to do. I grew up in a house, where, from when I was 4 to about twelve, my parents took in foreign students from Europe, and sometimes from further afield. I think that has given me a broader outlook on life. On Wednesday afternoons, Ebe run a café for international students, with a pool table, table tennis table, and free tea and cakes. Numbers have grown this year, and new relationships have been formed. We’ve had positive comments from students, and that has been really encouraging.

There have been many things which have been positive about the year team, I’ve found out more about myself in this year than any, my reliance on God in every area of life has grown, and I feel more a part of the community due to getting involved in schools, compassion teams etc. The year team has been, and continues to be a challenging and stimulating experience, one which I shall miss when it finishes.
